Walking with God.

Hebrews 11:5,6

What a wonderful thing to have as an epitaph: “Enoch pleased God.”

In the Bible there are some lovely commendations of people who have walked with God:

Moses: in Deuteronomy 34:10: “A man whom the Lord knew face to face.”

David: 1 Samuel 13:14 “A man after God’s own heart.”

Abraham: Isaiah 41:8 “Abraham, My friend.”

Dorcas– Acts 9: 36 “full of good works.”

But in contrast to this: Jehoram  2 Chronicles 21:20 He did evil things, including killing his six brothers. The Bible tells us that “he passed away, to no one’s regret.”

Enoch Genesis 5:24 “Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.”

How do we walk with God as Enoch did?

Number 1. 1 John 1:7 tells us to walk as Jesus did, to “walk in the light.” Reading and obeying God’s Word. Psalm 119: 105

Number 2. We need to be walking with God like the two on the road to Emmaus. Luke 24:32 “their hearts burned within them” as they walked with Jesus.

Number 3. Walk with God through the good times and the hard times. Psalm 23: “He leads me beside still waters, and He refreshes my soul.” He walks with us as we get the exam results we were hoping for, or celebrate getting a new job, or welcome a new baby into the family. But He is also there when we “walk through the valley of the shadow,” like the death of a loved one, the illness of someone close to us, or a difficult situation at work.

Number 4. We need faith to walk a life pleasing to God. Enoch lived a life pleasing to God. How lovely to be able to put a smile on the face of God!  Hebrews 11:6 we need faith to please God.

Number 5. How will my life be summed up?

Acts 10:38 tells us that “Jesus went about doing good.” He walked that way all the way to Calvary. What a contrast to King Jehoram, who “died and no one regretted it.”

When we look at our own lives, let’s aim to be like the apostle Paul, who summarises his own life in 2 Timothy 4:7
