Things to remember in 2023

Psalms 103:2

In many places the Bible tells us to remember.

Deuteronomy 8:2, Psalm 77:11, Acts 20:35

Two ways the Bible talks about God’s memory:

Number 1: The Rainbow. Genesis 9:16 God is faithful to His promises! He has promised peace, friendship, and eternal life to all those who believe in Him. When you see a rainbow, let it be a reminder that God is remembering you.

Number 2 symbol of God’s memory: a tattoo. Isaiah 49:16

When Jesus met with His frightened disciples after His crucifixion, He said, “Peace be with you.” Then He did a most significant thing. He said, “Look at my hands.” His hands had become the symbol of His infinite love. The scars on His hands where He had been crucified. (Luke 24:39). And those scars are still there on Jesus’ hands. So, as you approach 2023, if you are ever forgetful of His eternal love for you, have a look at Jesus’ hands.

What things should we be remembering in 2023?

Number 1. We always need to remember God’s goodness to us.  “Ebenezer- a stone of help.” (1 Samuel 7:12).  It reminded the Israelites that God had helped them. It is a blessed thing to look over our own lives and see our own “Ebenezers” where we can say, “God has helped me.”

Number 2. We should remember Bible verses. Memory verses, and “Scripture in Song.” Jesus promises us in John 14:26: “The Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance all that I have said.” It’s great when a Scripture verse comes to mind in a certain situation, and you know that it is God’s Holy Spirit reminding you of a truth that will help you.

Number 3. We need to remember the Cross. “Do this in remembrance of Me.” Luke 22:19. We remember it especially at Communion, but it’s not just at Communion – we remember it daily, and as disciples of Jesus we “take up our cross daily.” (Matthew 16:24). We say, “Lord, I want to live out that Cross in my life today. I want to die to my selfish desires, and I want to live totally for You each day in 2023. I will remember Your Cross in 2023.”

So, this year, as the psalmist exhorts us in Psalm 102:2: “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”
